Throughout the year neighbourhood’s around Barcelona take a turn at hosting their own version of a "Festa Mayor ” – a “Big Party ”. Imagine creatively decorated streets combined with concerts, music, food and a friendly neighbourly atmosphere, this is what the Festa Mayors are all about. The majority of these take place across the summer although some neighbourhoods do have them in winter. Probably the most famous of all the “Festa Mayors” is in Gràcia.
The winning street from last year (2015)

Every year in August, Gràcia celebrates with their spectacular week-long festival. Gràcia used to be separate before being joined with Barcelona and it’s located to the north of the city. This fun festival essentially is a neighbourhood competition to win the “best decorated street ”.
The standards on these decorations are extremely high and the competition is taken very seriously! Each street can pick whatever theme they want, the more creative, giving the better the chance of winning.
Amazing creativeness

The first time I visited the Gràcia festival was last year and I can honestly say I was completely amazed. The amount of work that goes into the planning, preparation and implementation of these adorned streets must be months in the making. The attention to detail and the materials used must really require some resourceful and artistic genius!
A "Moulin Rouge" themed street

As well as decorated streets, there will also be music, shows, concerts and food stalls etc. all week long. The festival is completely free and open to the public. This year’s festival is from 15th – 21 Aug (2016). The best way to arrive is by metro on the green line – Fontana stop. This brings you right into the midst of everything but before going any further you can pick up a programme which includes a map of which streets are decorated to make sure you don’t miss any! The programme also details all the other events that are happening throughout the week. Beware though! This festival is a favourite with locals and tourists alike so it will be busy. I love the atmosphere up Gràcia at this time, there’s a real sense of community. If you happen to be in Barcelona on those dates DO NOT MISS THIS!!
